Proof of concept study of potential biomarkers for gestational diabetes mellitus

Gestational diabetes (GDM) is a condition where a woman develops high blood glucose levels during pregnancy and is linked to risks during pregnancy for both mother and child. This condition typically resolves after delivery, but both the mother and child have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life. Therefore, it is important to diagnose GDM to be able to start appropriate disease management.
Currently, the diagnosis is made using the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), which is both unpleasant and time-consuming for the pregnant woman. The study aims to investigate potential biomarkers for gestational diabetes mellitus using newly developed assays and existing samples from the BiB cohort. The project will analyse specific biomarkers in serum samples to determine their accuracy in identifying GDM, and only women with a high risk of having GDM would need an oral glucose tolerance test to confirm GDM diagnosis.
