Food security among underserved groups in the Bradford District

Approximately 25% of families in the UK experience food insecurity. Not only is this a marker of deprivation, it is linked to poor mental and physical health. For example, children who experience food insecurity in the UK are more likely to have obesity and have poor dental health.
Our proposed research aims to provide a clearer understanding of patterns of food insecurity in Bradford by pulling together different sources of information, including information from the Born in Bradford surveys. This will tell us which communities experience the highest levels of food insecurity. We will compare this to the availability of support and resources (including food banks and other community food organisations) to see if help is accessible, both geographically and culturally.
We will also discuss the findings with an existing group of people who have lived experience of food insecurity. This group includes representation from a diverse range of people who live in different areas of Bradford, and will help us make sense of the results.
We will share this information with Bradford council so that it can help with decision making about where it is best to invest support and what type of support might be most helpful.
