Background: Limited research has examined how different trajectories of labor onset and mode of birth interact to influence maternal mental health outcomes.
Research question: To examine the associations of modes of birth and adverse maternal psychological health postpartum in term pregnant women in three European birth cohorts.
Population: Primiparous and Multiparous term pregnant women
Exposure: Trajectory of experiences during mode of birth (spontaneous vaginal birth, instrumental vaginal birth with vacuum/forceps, emergency CS, elective CS)
Comparator: spontaneous labour & spontaneous vaginal birth
Outcomes: Longer-term adverse maternal psychological health (postpartum depression)
