Leveraging and Enhancing Cohort Data to Improve Detection of Heavy Menstrual Bleeding

Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) is common, yet often under-recognised and under-treated. It can lead to iron deficiency and may be caused by conditions like fibroids or endometriosis. This project aims to improve understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of HMB by building a world-leading research resource. We will work with two large UK studies (ALSPAC and Born in Bradford) to collect new information on menstrual health. This includes symptoms, iron levels, and related health conditions. A subset of 600 participants from each cohort will take part in a sub study to collect more intensive data – using smartphone apps and wearable devices to track their cycles, symptoms, and lifestyle over time. We will also build the largest biobank of dried menstrual blood samples ever created, which will help us explore biological markers of menstrual health using cutting-edge methods.
By combining genetic, biological, and lifestyle data, we will identify factors linked to HMB and related conditions. This will allow us to create predictive tools to identify women at risk earlier and more accurately. Our findings could help guide future treatments and ensure better support for those affected by HMB.
