Assessment of Variables of School Quality in Osun State High Schools

Abstract

The study assessed the quality of Osun state high schools. Specifically, the study assessed conditions of some variables that depict the state of the high schools in Osun state. One research question guided the study. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. A sample size of 72 school administrators was selected from a population of 131 school administrators. Multi-stage sampling technique was used for sample selection. A validated questionnaire titled: School Quality Questionnaire (SQQ) was used for data collection with a reliability index of 0.79. Data collected were analysed using counts, percentages, mean and standard deviation. Results showed that the available classrooms were not conducive, instructional resources, teaching infrastructures (libraries, laboratories, workshop), teacher’s rate of deployment, health service were not in good condition. However, results showed counselling unit to function well, textbooks, teacher’s level of specialisation and workload are in right state. The study therefore concluded that school quality in Osun State High schools needs improvement in terms of facilities/resources and teacher’s rate of deployment to schools. The study therefore recommended prompt attention of Government to the needs of Osun state high schools and proper maintenance of provided resources to enhance school quality.
