“They’re Making the Rich Richer and the Poor Poorer”: The UK Cost of Living Crisis and Social Inequality

Open Access
Journal of Poverty
2025

High inflation rates in the United Kingdom have seen soaring costs for everyday expenses, which have been unevenly felt. Twenty-eight participants took part in semistructured interviews (N = 7) and focus groups (N = 21) that explored how families living in areas of deprivation in Bradford (UK), were adapting lifestyles in response to the cost of living crisis. We identify four themes that encompass access to work and education; cultural consumption; emotional impact; and rising crime. The cost of living crisis is adding to vulnerabilities associated with living in areas experiencing deprivation. Targeted support is needed for those with the lowest incomes.
