Perceived Discrimination, School Experiences and Mental Health Inequalities in the Born in Bradford Age of Wonder Cohort

The University of York has been working with BiB, via the NIHR ARC, on the creation of the curated dataset (SP797). We now wish to access this resource for one University of Greenwich PGT student project, spanning academic years 2025/2026, 2026/2027 and 2028/2029.

We anticipate at least 1 student project using the resource this year, across the Public Health Portfolio within the Faculty for Health and Human Services. We have provided a list of research questions below and can expand on these as new research questions become finalised, later this year.

As this is the first year of the use of the Curated Dataset, this will also act as a proof-of-concept for accessing the resource.
This initial MSc dissertation will use the Born in Bradford Age of Wonder dataset to explore how experiences of discrimination are associated with young people’s mental health. The project will examine whether these experiences differ across groups of young people, including by gender, ethnicity and socioeconomic background, and whether positive school experiences and resilience may help protect against poorer mental health.
The study will analyse information that has already been collected as part of the Age of Wonder study to identify groups of young people who may be more vulnerable to poorer mental health, as well as protective factors that could help improve wellbeing. The findings could help inform future school-based mental health support, early intervention strategies and wider public health policy for adolescents from diverse backgrounds.
