Vitamin D is important for strong bones and good health. Our bodies make most of it when our skin is exposed to sunlight. In the UK, sunlight is weaker in autumn and winter, so it can be hard to get enough vitamin D during these months. Because of this, the NHS suggests people take vitamin D supplements, especially those at higher risk.
Many people in the UK, including children, have low vitamin D levels. Some groups are more at risk than others, such as those with darker skin, people who are overweight, and those who don’t spend much time outside or have a poor diet. These differences also link to bigger issues like poverty and health inequalities.
This study will look at vitamin D levels in a group of adolescents from different ethnic backgrounds. It will find out how vitamin D varies with age, sex, weight, and ethnicity, and how many have low vitamin D. The study will also check how vitamin D changes with the seasons in South Asian and White British adolescents.
The goal is to understand which groups need the most support and when. This will help make better health advice and encourage people to take vitamin D supplements.
