Experiences of discrimination and food insecurity are stressful and can negatively affect adolescent mental health. Resilience to adversity has been shown, in some situations, to reduce the impact of adversity on mental health. A plausible hypothesis is that adolescents who experience multiple types of adversity (i.e. multiple discriminations and food insecurity) could experience adverse effects that are bigger than the sum of their individual parts (multiple jeopardy) and this could further deteriorate mental health outcomes. The existence of evidence for multiple jeopardy would have important implications for public health intervention and policy.
