Cultural Hierarchies in Health: Examining the role of inherited sociocultural position (biraderi) in shaping infant feeding practices and children?s food consumption in primary school among British Pakistanis.

This project seeks to understand the influence, if any, that biraderi (inherited socio-cultural position amongst South Asian communities) has on infant and child nutrition. It focuses on whether and how biraderi influences decisions around early childhood food practices: decisions around breastfeeding and nutritional quality of food choices in infancy and childhood. The aim is to uncover how parents feed their children, and what this means for their children’s overall nutritional status and risk of being overweight or obese.
