ATHLETE Toolkit – Introduction

How do we make sense of things in our environment that we come across in our daily lives? What might be harmful to our health and what might be good for us? And, once we start to figure that out, how can we make positive changes to improve our surroundings and our wellbeing?

In our ATHLETE project, we’ve worked together with different groups – schools, pupils, parents, researchers, local government – to better understand issues around air pollutants and our urban environment such as:

  • Where and how much air pollution pupils are exposed to on their daily commutes
  • How we can work together (‘co-produce’) to come up with, and put into place, actions (‘interventions’) to lower the amount of air pollution pupils come into contact with
  • What actions (‘interventions’) have been tried before by researchers and do they work as intended (are they ‘effective’)?
  • What might be the priorities in a city if they could only choose to put a certain number of actions in place?

We have also worked to find out about the chemical pollutants found in our everyday personal care products (shampoo, toothpaste, soap, make-up, fragrances, etc.) including:

  • What kind and how much of the chemicals found in our everyday products show up in our bodies when we use them?
  • Is it possible to reduce the levels of these chemicals in our bodies? How – and, what’s the best way?

In this toolkit, we have resources for different interests:

Find out about chemical and air pollution, how it can affect your health, how to identify and replace or remove harmful personal care products, and how to advocate for change.

Find materials and activities to carry out with your pupils including how to monitor the air pollution levels around your school and improve the school environment.

Find evidence-based and expert consensus-based interventions which can improve the health of your communities.
