Talking Together: Language support at home for parents of 2 year olds

Funder: Nuffield Health

Investigator: Dr Claudine Bowyer-Crane, Dr Dea Nielsen, Dr Josie Dickerson, Dr Maria Bryant

Many children start school with poor language skills that affect their ability to learn and take part. Talking Together is a language intervention developed locally in Bradford by BHT Early Education and Training and funded by Better Start Bradford. The service assesses the language development of all 2 year old children living in the Better Start Bradford areas and offers a 6 week course at home to the parents of children at risk of language delay. This intervention has been running for a long time in Bradford, and we know that it is well liked by families, but we don’t yet have the evidence to prove how effective it is at improving children’s language skills.

Nuffield have funded a feasibility trial which will allow us to look at how children’s language changes after receiving the interventions. It will also explore the best options for a larger full trial to prove effectiveness in the future.
