Epidemiology of young people?s gender identity in Bradford

Gender diverse populations refers to individuals whose gender identity may not match with the gender they were assigned at birth, this can include binary and non-binary transgender individuals. Research on gender diverse populations mostly focuses on ethnically white groups (Millar & Brooks, 2022; Toomey et al., 2017) and very little is known about transgender communities within more diverse populations. Interview studies have highlighted that people who are in multiple minority groups (such as trans and also part of an ethnic minority) are especially vulnerable to physical and mental health difficulties (Hendricks & Testa, 2012; Meyer,2003; Khanolkar et al., 2022). Therefore, the purpose of this study will help to better understand gender diversity in more diverse populations.
This will be done by analysing data collected through the Age of Wonder cohort study according to key demographics, by the external researchers from the Born in Bradford studies, KCL and the Children and Young Person Gender Services. The aim of this research is to better understand and describe the children and young people in Bradford and assess the relationships between gender, discrimination and mental health outcomes, controlling for various other factors. This will provide new insights into previously under-researched demographics.
