BiB have worked with local midwives to introduce a number of changes to practice to improve both the collection of information and how midwives work. One of these changes is introducing carbon monoxide monitoring for women in pregnancy, and providing greater support to mothers to stop smoking in pregnancy. Midwives are now able to make appointments directly with the Bradford Stop Smoking Service during their regular appointments with patients and also get feedback from the Stop Smoking Service on how their patients are getting on with stopping smoking. We are now considering how we can develop a pathway of referrals for women who smoke during pregnancy.
